Postecoglou fails to respond to team collapse

“I’m not sure what went wrong…Newcastle played well, we didn’t”

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou summarized the game after the loss, saying Newcastle United played well and Tottenham didn’t.

Tottenham Hotspur fell to Newcastle United 0-4 in the 33rd round of the 2023-2024 English Premier League (PL) at St. James’ Park in Newcastle, England, on Wednesday (Sept. 13). With a four-goal deficit after one game, Tottenham (+16) drops to fifth place, behind Aston Villa (+17), who are tied on 60 points.

Spurs were completely outplayed by Newcastle. After Timo Werner had a couple of shots on target early in the game, the Magpies surrendered the initiative to Newcastle, and were repeatedly broken down by the combination of Alexander Isaac and Anthony Gordon. Isaac opened the scoring in the 30th minute on the counter-attack after a pass from Gordon. Two minutes later, Gordon rattled the net himself.

Tottenham didn’t regroup in the second half. In the sixth minute of the second half, a counterattack that began with a long pass from Bruno Guimarães set up Isaac for the winner. In the 13th minute of the second half, Tottenham’s bench made three substitutions at once, including Son Heung-min, in an attempt to turn the tide, but it didn’t work. They were unable to add any more shots on goal after the substitutions, and instead found themselves on the wrong end of a Fabian Schurrle header from a Gordon corner in the 42nd minute.

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Postecoglou said: “Newcastle played well. I think they were really good today. We didn’t have our heads on straight. We couldn’t do what we usually do,” he conceded.

Asked if conceding two goals in quick succession in the first half affected the whole game, he shook his 토토 head. “I felt we lacked confidence in a lot of areas from that point on. They knew they could hurt us in transition and that’s what they did,” he said. “We tried, but to be honest, I don’t think anybody played as well as I did,” he added.

In an interview with TNT Sports, he had a similar reaction. “Newcastle played really well, we just weren’t at a level where we could have taken control of the game,” he said.

When asked what went wrong, he didn’t immediately answer. “We will have time to analyze. I’m not sure (what went wrong) at the moment,” he said.
